Unlocking requirements management using OSLC extensions

By: Wilhelm Ekman, Simone Bernardi, Celeris AB

Working on large and complex projects, especially in the presence of numerous regulations and evolving technologies, can be overwhelming. In such scenarios, leveraging available tools and resources becomes crucial for seamless and efficient project management. One such powerful resource is OSLC, or Open Services for Lifecycle Collaboration. Originally designed for software development, OSLC has now expanded its reach to Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM). OSLC acts as a web-based standard, empowering users to integrate tools and data, enabling an unhindered flow of information throughout the complete product development lifecycle. In this article, we will explore the significance of OSLC in requirements management, and highlight how it can drive effective collaboration and interoperability within projects.

OSLC Streamlines Information Flow

The core strength of OSLC lies in its ability to link information from different lifecycle tools, establishing a seamless flow of data across the product development lifecycle. By connecting various tools and platforms, OSLC ensures that stakeholders have access to the most up-to-date information, promoting real-time collaboration and reducing the risk of miscommunication. This integration between tools allows for efficient requirement traceability, making it easier to track changes, manage dependencies, and ensure compliance with regulations.

A Case Study: IBM Engineering Lifecycle Management (ELM)

One notable tool that capitalizes on OSLC is IBM ELM, which offers a comprehensive suite of applications for software and systems development. Integrated within ELM is IBM Engineering Requirements Management DOORS® Next (DOORS Next), a powerful requirements management tool. DOORS Next provides a REST API that enables the development of extensions, enhancing the quality and functionality of the tool. By extending DOORS Next's capabilities, teams can unlock new features, improve efficiency, and create customized workflows tailored to specific project needs.

Interoperability and Extensibility:

A key advantage of OSLC being an open standard is its ability to promote interoperability between tools, regardless of tool vendors. Developers can build extensions based on the core principles of OSLC, extending the functionalities of different tools and facilitating seamless collaboration. This interoperability enhances the exchange of information, eliminates silos, and fosters the integration of various tools within the development process. However, to ensure compatibility with future tools and environments, adhering to the OASIS OSLC CCM TC specification is recommended.

Unlocking the Potential of AI

With the rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI), its untapped potential for integration with OSLC and Requirements Management tools is an exciting direction for the future. AI has the capability to streamline and automate various aspects of requirements management, from requirement elicitation and analysis to traceability and validation. By leveraging AI, teams can benefit from intelligent insights, automated document generation, and predictive analytics, enhancing the overall efficiency and quality of the development process.

In today's increasingly complex and regulated project environments, OSLC stands as a crucial resource for managing requirements. By integrating tools and streamlining information flow, OSLC enhances collaboration, reduces communication gaps, and improves overall project efficiency. In this short note, we have explored the importance of OSLC, leveraging the IBM ELM ecosystem as an illustration of its capabilities. Looking ahead, incorporating AI into the OSLC framework presents immense potential for unlocking further benefits and driving innovation in requirements management. Embracing OSLC will undoubtedly empower organizations to thrive in an era of ever-evolving project demands and technological advancements.
